Olympic bronze medalist Wilson Kipsang made a strong move late to win the Honolulu Marathon going away today in a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, 31 seconds.

Kipsang missed the course record of 2:11:12.

Valentina Galimova of Russia won the women’s race with an unofficial time of 2:31:23.

A total of 25,719 entrants picked up race packets for the 40th running of the event, the most in 10 years according to marathon spokesman Pat Bigold.

It featured the strongest field of elite men in the event’s history, led by Kipsang of Kenya who owns the second fastest official marathon time ever.

Kipsang was among a group of five runners jockeying for the lead with about five miles left, but Kipsang ran his 23rd mile in 4:39 to pull away and was all alone heading toward Diamond Head and the finish.

Markos Geneti of Ethiopia was second in 2:13.08.

Kipsang was a late entrant, joining the field after the New York City Marathon last month was canceled.

Two-time Olympic decathlon medalist Bryan Clay, a Castle High graduate, finished in 4 hours, 46 minutes. He crossed the finish line with his wife, Sarah, who was also running her first marathon.

Krige Schabort crossed the finish line first again, winning his ninth wheelchair title in 1:33:17.
