Police nab man who allegedly tried to repeat Don Quijote heist, search for accomplice

Two men, after getting away with robbing the Don Quijote store in Waipahu at gunpoint Monday, tried to pull the same stickup two nights later, but were foiled by a security guard Wednesday night, according to police.

A 26-year-old Kaneohe man is in custody after a security guard recognized him as the suspect who allegedly pulled a handgun on him Monday night and left without paying for some merchandise.

Police said the suspect returned to the store at 9 p.m. Wednesday and again tried to leave the Waipahu store without paying for liquor.

When the security guard tried to stop him, the suspect brandished a handgun as he had done Monday night, police said.

The suspect fled in a black pickup truck that police said was stolen a week ago, but was found by a patrol unit a few blocks away.

The 26-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery and several firearms and contempt charges.

The driver of the stolen truck remains at large.
