U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye remains hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and there is still no indication as to when he will be released, his deputy chief of staff said tonight. 

“He is stable and communicating with his doctors and family,” Peter Boylan said. “Unfortunately, he is fighting respiratory complications as work is being done to stabilize his supplemental oxygen requirements. At this time, there is no time table for his release.”

Inouye, 88, was hospitalized at George Washington University Hospital on Dec. 6 after fainting in one of his Senate offices. He was moved to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Dec. 9. 

The Hawaii Democrat has been using an oxygen supplement for the past several months and said in a past statement that he is working with his doctors to regulate his oxygen intake.

Inouye was taken to the Bethesda Naval Hospital on Nov. 15 to receive treatment for a minor cut he sustained on the back of his head after falling at his Maryland home. He was released that day.

Boylan said Inouye’s family and loved ones are overwhelmed by the outpouring of affection and good wishes for his recovery. 

“We ask that the people of Hawaii and the nation keep the senator in their thoughts and prayers,” he said.
