Traffic-related fatalities jump 72% on Hawaii island
The number of traffic-related fatalities on Hawaii island jumped from 22 in 2011 to 38 last year — a spike of 72 percent.
Traffic statistics released by the Hawaii Police Department last week also indicated a rise in DUI arrests and major traffic-related accidents.
Overall, there were 1,477 DUI arrests in Hawaii County in 2012, compared to 1,435 the previous year.
Meanwhile, the number of major traffic accidents rose to 1,455 from 1,409.
Big Island police made 18 DUI arrests on the last week of the year. Three of the drivers arrested were involved in traffic crashes.
Of the 38 traffic-related fatalities last year, 28 were related to drugs (12), alcohol (4) or a combination of both (12), according to police.
