Question: A young girl on a flight I took recently had blinking headphones. This was an overnight flight, and she never took them off. Her mother never said a word to her. That would be considered a no-no, right?

Answer: Yes. If you’re fond of jogging in total darkness, those blinking lights could be a safety feature, but they are definitely not necessary on a plane. I think most parents would see their child take out the blinking headphones and say, "Oh no, you are not putting those on while everyone is trying to sleep" — or, better yet, "Pack normal headphones, please." But since this girl’s mother obviously did not, it would have been perfectly OK for you to mention (politely) that the blinking lights were bothering you. For example, "Excuse me, is there any way for your daughter to use her headphones without the lights? They’re making it tough to sleep."

Q: Please, please, please, people, could you avoid wearing jingle-bell earrings, sweaters, bracelets, etc., on holiday travels? Sitting next to someone on a train or airplane who never stops jingling puts me in the exact opposite of the holiday spirit.

A: Agreed. Save the jingle-bell-festooned apparel and accessories for your destination.
