Seattle’s Russell Wilson will take Matt Ryan’s place in Sunday’s Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium.

RENTON, Wash. » Seattle Seahawks rookie quarterback Russell Wilson has been added to the NFC roster for the Pro Bowl after Atlanta’s Matt Ryan withdrew due to a sprained shoulder.

Coach Mike Smith says Ryan will need three to four weeks to recover from the injury, which was described as a sprained AC joint to the non-throwing shoulder. No surgery is required.

Ryan was hurt just after the two-minute warning. On a 5-yard pass that Jason Snelling took down to the San Francisco 10, linebacker Ahmad Brooks got a shot on the Atlanta quarterback. Ryan’s next two passes were incomplete, sealing the 49ers’ 28-24 victory.

Smith says Ryan would’ve played if the Falcons had beaten the 49ers and advanced to the Super Bowl in two weeks.

Wilson was added to the team on Monday. He will be the sixth Seahawks player in the game, joining offensive linemen Max Unger, who went to high school at Hawaii Prep, and Russell Okung; running back Marshawn Lynch; safety Earl Thomas and kick returner Leon Washington.

Wilson threw for 3,118 yards and tied the NFL rookie record with 26 passing touchdowns in the regular season. His finest performance of the year came in Seattle’s NFC playoff loss at Atlanta Wilson threw for 385 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-28 defeat.

Wilson was originally voted a third alternate for the NFC.
