Fire crews contain gas leak at UH-Manoa construction site

Hawaii Gas work crews completed repairs of a damaged gas line at 11:30 p.m. Monday at the Information Technology Center construction site on the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus.

The leak was first reported around 8 p.m. Monday and prompted the evacuation of about 25 people from four adjacent buildings and the nearby mall area.

The incident apparently started when an excavator slide into a trench damaging an outdoor gas line, causing synthetic natural gas to leak out around 8 p.m., according to Joe Boivin, Hawaii Gas spokesman.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig, said a HAZMAT crew was able to plug and patch the leak around 9 p.m.

About 25 people from four adjacent buildings and the nearby mall area were evacuated.
