What’s left of a weather system that helped bring rain to Oahu Sunday has moved west of the islands and skies have cleared, at least until tonight, in Honolulu.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Oahu, Kauai and Niihau in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday. The watch comes on the heels of widespread rains Sunday evening that drenched Oahu.

Forecasters say returning trade winds will blow some of the moisture still in the air back to the islands. They predict increased showers in windward and mauka areas by tonight.

Heavy rain is expected Tuesday in Honolulu and some precipitation could linger through the end of the week, when we might get a short break on Friday before another weather system moves through the state. Forecasters warn intense rainfall rates are possible beginning Tuesday, and could be of sufficient duration to cause flash flooding of streams.

The weather service has also extended a high wind warning for Hawaii island summits until 6 p.m. today, with gusts more than 60 mph possible. Sustained winds of 35 to 55 mph are expected.
