Pride of America cruise ship undergoes maintenance at Pearl Harbor

The 921-foot cruise ship Pride of America is in the Pearl Harbor shipyard for more than $30 million in renovation work over two weeks, officials said.
BAE Systems Hawaii Shipyards is performing the work in Dry Dock 4. The 2,124-passenger ship is receiving 24 new luxury suites, four studio staterooms, a Brazilian-style steakhouse restaurant, new carpeting, flat television screens and other upgrades, Norwegian Cruise Line said back in September.
When Pride of America entered the shipyard for work back in 2010, the Navy said it was the largest privately owned ship ever to be dry-docked at Pearl Harbor.
Federal law permits a Defense Department industrial facility to make underutilized assets available to a private company to conduct commercial work that is compatible with the mission of the government activity.
Pearl Harbor’s dry dock is the only facility in Hawaii large enough to handle the cruise ship, so the use of Dry Dock 4 does not compete with local dry dock capacity, the Navy said.
