LIHUE >> A man must pay more than $8,000 in restitution for killing a pregnant goat at a Kauai dairy.

The Garden Island reported Thursday that Ryan Jacob Winchell was also sentenced to 30 days in jail, with credit for 56 days he already served.

The 29-year-old was one of two men charged with animal cruelty and other charges in the April 2011 slaughter of Kaitlyn, a milking goat. Kunana Dairy had offered an $11,000 reward in the case.

Dairy owner Louisa Wooten says the reward was never given out because co-defendant Russell Hoomanawanui and his girlfriend implicated Winchell.

Hoomanawanui pleaded guilty last month. Sentencing is scheduled for June.

Winchell blames the killing on his drug and alcohol addiction but says he believed they were going hunting.
