No. 4 Fullerton blanks Hawaii to even series

Justin Garza and two relievers combined for No. 4 Cal State Fullerton’s eighth shutout of the year and J.D. Davis had a career-high five hits in a 5-0 victory over Hawaii on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Garza (9-0) allowed five hits and one walk with two strikeouts in eight innings to allow the Titans (35-7, 11-3 Big West) to remain a game ahead of Cal State Northridge for the outright conference lead.

Davis hit five singles, scored twice and drove in a run. He also pitched the final three outs, getting Kalei Hanawahine to fly out to right with the bases loaded to end the game.

Conner George and Andre Real each had two hits for the Rainbows (9-28, 4-10), who were shut out for the sixth time.

Matt Cooper (2-6) allowed three runs on five hits in three innings to take the loss. Sophomore Scott Squier pitched six innings in relief and gave up two runs on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Hawaii will turn to senior Corey MacDonald (4-4, 4.11 ERA) to try for the series win on Sunday at 1:05.

Fullerton, which is ranked as high as third in three major polls, has not lost a series this season.
