UH’s Zamora, Parnaby named Big West players of the week
University of Hawaii second baseman Jazmine Zamora was named Big West softball Field Player of the Week Monday and senior Kaia Parnaby earned her fifth pitcher of the week award of the season.
Zamora hit .545 (6-for-11) with two doubles and a home run in UH’s series sweep at Pacific. Zamora’s two-run homer in the sixth inning of the series opener last Friday sent UH to a 3-1 win and the Rainbow Wahine clinched the Big West championship.
Parnaby (37-5) earned two wins in the series, breaking two conference records in the process. Her complete-game victory in the opener gave her the Big West’s single-season wins record, a mark that stood since 1987. She raised her strikeout total to 325 in the series finale to pass the previous UH and Big West records set by former Wahine standout Brooke Wilkins in 1994.
The Rainbow Wahine finished the regular season at 43-11 and open NCAA tournament play on Friday against Minnesota in the Seattle, Wash., regional.
