Town surfers can expect a series of south swells starting today. But the National Weather Services warns the 6- to 10-foot waves could be dangerous because of strong rip currents and breaking surf on shore that could wash beachgoers into the ocean.

A high surf advisory is posted from 6 a.m. today to 6 a.m. Saturday for south-facing shores of all islands. Forecasters say the advisory could be extended as the swells may continue to bring waves to south shores through early next week.

Forecasters say the swell should start building this morning, but he larger waves are not expected until this afternoon.

A reinforcement swell should arrive Saturday.

Two other storm near New Zealand could bring even more surf to south shores Sunday and Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says beachgoers and swimmers should heed advice given by lifeguards and exercise caution.

Boaters should also be aware of recreational surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.
