Honolulu to be finish line for ocean rowing race

[ AD HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THIS STORY ]

The inaugural Great Pacific Race, a human-powered rowing race, will launch from Monterey, Calif. June 7, 2014 and will end 2,100 nautical miles later in Honolulu.

The race is being organized by Chris Martin, who, prior to announcing the race, discussed his own ocean-rowing achievements including his 2009 record as part of the first team to row to San Francisco from Japan.

Thus far, 15 crews of 38 people from nine countries have confirmed participation in the race, which organizers are calling the first-ever between the two points. Registration remains open until early September.

Organizers believe the fastest two-person crew could complete the race in 40 days, while a four-person crew could finish in around a month.
