Maui’s Shane Victorino started in centerfield today for the Boston Red Sox in game 2 of a double-header against the Los Angeles Angels today.
Victorino was inserted into the leadoff spot and started in center field so Jacoby Ellsbury, who recently returned from a groin injury, could get a rest, a story on the Red Sox’s website said.
Victorino singled to left on his first at-bat and scored in the first inning on a Jonny Gomes double.
Victornio last played for Boston on May 20, when he suffered a left hamstring strain and was put on the disabled list.
He played Thursday with Triple-A Pawtucket, going 2-for-4 with a homer.
In the sixth inning, Victorino faced Waipahu’s Jerome Williams, who came in as a relief pitcher. Williams struck Victorino out. Victorino hit into an out to end the eighth inning against Williams.
But the Red Sox won the game 7-2.
