SAN ANTONIO » A soldier who wounded a fellow service member in a shooting at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio today surrendered and is in military custody, a base spokesman says.
The shooting took place at the Army Medical Department Center and School at about 2:50 p.m., the Army said in a statement. Base spokesman Brent Boller said the gunman surrendered to San Antonio police and the female victim is in stable condition.
San Antonio police Chief William McManus told the San Antonio Express-News that the victim and shooter were involved in a relationship and that no other people were targeted in the attack.
The woman was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center, which is also on the post, Boller said.
Authorities locked down the base for about two hours while military police cleared the building where the shooting took place.
Fort Sam Houston is one of the oldest U.S. military bases still in operation and is located in central San Antonio. In addition to hosting one the nation’s top burn units, most army medics undergo training there.
