Honolulu’s Michelle Wie and local amateur Mariel Galdiano didn’t fare well at today’s opening round of the U.S. Women’s Open played at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southhampton, N.Y.

Both players shot an 8-over-par 80 and are tied for 141st entering tomorrow’s second round of the LPGA Tour’s third major of the year. They trail first-round leader Ha-Neui Kim of South Korea by 14 shots after she shot a 6-under 66.

Wie started on the back nine and opened with an eight at the par-4 10th. She also had a three-hole stretch at Nos.14-16 where she went bogey, double bogey, bogey en route to a horrendous 45 on her opening nine.

The Punahou and Stanford graduate then bogeyed three of the first four holes on her back nine to go 11 over after 14 holes. She managed three birdies the rest of the way to finish her back nine at even-par 35.

As for Galdiano, who at 15 is the second-youngest player in this year’s Open, she opened on the back nine with three bogeys over her first four holes en route to a 40. She had another 40 on her back nine that included one birdie at the par-5 eighth.
