It took firefighters about an hour early this morning to locate a homeless man who said he needed medical attention after being bitten by a spider while camping off the Old Pali Road.

Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said the man in his 60s, who said he was homeless, called for help on his cellphone at 2 a.m. saying he had been bitten by a spider.

The caller said he was disoriented and suffering from a possible reaction from the spider bite.

Seelig said, using the signal from the cell phone, firefighters were able to determine that the caller was about 100 yards in the forest near the Old Pali Road close to Judd Trail.

Firefighters reached the victim at 3 a.m. He was released after being examined and did not have any insect bite or other injuries.
