A 25-year-old visitor from South Korea suffered a broken ankle when the bicycle he was riding went off Haleakala Crater Road and slipped 30 feet below an embankment.

Maui firefighters said the bicyclist got into trouble at eight-mile marker on Haleakala Crater Road at 7:05 a.m.

Firefighters hiked down to the man and provided first aid treatment. He was carried up the embankment, placed in an ambulance, and transported by ambulance in stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was treated for a compound fracture to his right ankle.
