Lot of balls in air for Texas Tech-SMU opener

DALLAS >> There will be a lot of balls in the air when Texas Tech plays at SMU in a season opener Friday night.

The Mustangs are playing their first game meshing together the “Air Raid” philosophy of new passing game coordinator Hal Mumme and head coach June Jones’ “Run and Shoot.”

Kliff Kingsbury makes his head coaching debut at Texas Tech. The former Red Raiders quarterback threw for 12,429 yards and 95 touchdowns in 43 games, and his big-yardage mode isn’t much different as a coach, including last season as Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator with Heisman Trophy-winning freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Texas Tech has won 14 consecutive games in the series. This is the sixth time since 2003 the former Southwest Conference rivals have played in a season opener.
