Hawaii moves to No. 9 in volleyball poll
The Hawaii women’s volleyball team moved up to No. 9 Monday in the AVCA Division I Volleyball Coaches Top 25, the first official poll of the season.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-1) were No. 11 in the preseason poll. Hawaii upset preseason No. 1 Texas, the defending national champion, on Friday but fell to unranked San Diego Sunday in five sets.
Texas (2-1), which defeated San Diego in five sets Saturday, dropped to No. 6 while USD (2-1) moved up to No. 14; the Toreros had received enough votes in the preseason poll to be 26th.
The Longhorns falling out of the top spot had the next three teams all moving up one place. Penn State (2-0) is the new No. 1, receiving 50 of the 60 first-place votes, followed by Stanford (1-0, eight votes) and USC (3-0, two votes).
Minnesota moved two spots to No. 4 and Washington remained at No. 5. Rounding out the Top 10 were Texas, Michigan, Florida, Hawaii and UCLA.
The Rainbow Wahine resume play Thursday in the Hawaiian Airlines Classic with New Mexico State. Hawaii coach Dave Shoji is one win away from tying retired UCLA coach Andy Banachowski as the all-time winningest coach in the sport at 1,105 victories.
