2-car crash near airport snarls Kauai traffic
A two-car collision at a major Lihue intersection Thursday afternoon caused traffic delays for afternoon commuters, county officials said.
The 31-year-old woman driving a minivan involved in the crash and her one- and six-year-old passengers were treated by medics on scene and released, officials said. The 67-year-old man driving the second car, a Ford sedan, and the woman riding with him were also treated and released on scene.
The incident occurred just before 4 p.m. when the sedan, which was headed south on Kapule Highway, attempted to make a left turn into the Lihue Airport and was struck by an oncoming minivan. Officials said the minivan veered onto the median and ran into a traffic pole.
The road remained open following the crash, but both vehicles were towed from the scene and traffic at the intersection of Kapule Highway and Ahukini Road backed up for about 40 minutes while police completed their investigation.
