Maryland man ID’d as apparent drowning victim

A 66-year-old visitor from Maryland died Tuesday after being pulled from the waters fronting the Hawaiian Electric Kahe power plant where he had been snorkeling.

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Robert Dernetz, of Towson, Md.

Emergency Medical Services said the incident occurred at 10:31 a.m. at Kahe Point Beach Park and the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Police said there was no signs of foul play.

An autopsy will be conducted today to determine cause of death.
