Nevada's Brock Hekking (53) forced Hawaii's Jeremy Higgins (12) to fumble, during the second half of an NCAA college football game in Reno, Nev., today. Nevada recovered the fumble.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Stewart, starting for the injured Cody Fajardo, threw three touchdown passes to lead Nevada to a 31-9 victory over Hawaii on Saturday in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams at Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nev.
Hawaii, which has lost nine straight on the road, fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2000.
Four quarterbacks played for UH, which committed six turnovers in the second half.
Starter Taylor Graham was 9-for-15 for 77 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury.
Sean Schroeder threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Gant with 34 seconds remaining in the first half but was intercepted twice in the third quarter.
Jeremy Higgins was 5-for-11 for 51 yards but fumbled twice. Ikaika Woolsey was intercepted twice in the fourth quarter.
Stewart finished 14-for-20 for 202 yards to lead the Wolf Pack (2-2, 1-0) to their third straight win over Hawaii. Tight end Kolby Arendse caught two first-half touchdown passes from Stewart and finished with four catches for 77 yards.
Tyler Hadden kicked a 28-yard field goal as Hawaii scored on its opening drive to take the early lead. UH was stopped on fourth and 1 at the Nevada 28 on its next possession.
Brent Zuzo added a 21-yard field goal with 3:19 remaining in the first half to push the Nevada lead to 17-3.
Running back Joey Iosefa and tight end Harold Moleni left the game with injuries in the first half and didn’t return.
Hawaii outgained Nevada 376-340 in total yardage. Running back Diocemy Saint Juste finished with 82 rushing yards on 12 carries and Steven Lakalaka carried the ball nine times for 42 yards.
Fajardo sat out his second consecutive game for the Wolf Pack with a knee injury.
Hawaii returns home to face Fresno State next Saturday at 6 p.m.
