Flash flood watch lifted for three islands; Brown water advisory issued for Kauai

This weather radar image taken at 7:05 a.m. this morning shows rain to the north and west of the islands.

A flash flood watch was lifted this afternoon for Oahu, Kauai and Niihau after the weather system that brought heavy showers Monday weakened and began moving away from the islands.

The National Weather Service watch for the three islands was supposed to be in effect until 6 p.m., but was lifted after 3:30 p.m.

But a brown water advisory was issued around 10:30 a.m. by state Department of Health officials for the windward and northern areas of Kauai. Officials advised the public to avoid flood waters and storm runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and related flood debris. The advisory covers Nawiliwili to Hanalei.

Kauai had also been under a flash flood warning that expired at 6:30 a.m. today.

Weather service forecasters expect drier air and light winds for the next several days.
