Brush fires in Hilo Forest Reserve prove stubborn
State fire crews today continued to work on extinguishing a brush fire in a remote section of the Hilo Forest Reserve near Keanakolu.
Department of Land and Natural Resources firefighters working this weekend to mop up in the Hilo Forest Reserve found another small fire below a fenced unit on the Humuula Trail. The combined size of both fires is three acres.
Since the grass was green in the new area, there was not a clean burn. As it dries out, it is reigniting and burning due to the high organic content in the soil.
State firefighters brought in a private 5,000-gallon water tender from Waimea to assist in fire control operations.
