Wahine basketball team beats Wazzu in home opener


Senior forward Kamilah Jackson had 21 points and 15 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, and freshman guard Briana Harris had 21 points and five assists in her first career home game.

The Hawaii women’s basketball team prevailed in its 2013-14 home opener with a 77-66 defeat of Washington State on the first night of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic.

Senior forward Kamilah Jackson had 21 points and 15 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, and freshman guard Briana Harris had 21 points and five assists in her first career home game. Sophomore Destiny King added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Wahine (2-1).

WSU sophomore guard Lia Galdeira, a Konawaena alumnus and three-time state player of the year, scored a season-high 29 points to lead the Cougars.

UH seized control late after the Cougars drew to within 69-65 with 1:50 remaining. Shawna Kuehu scored her first basket of the game and Harris and Kuehu followed with four straight free throws.

Galdeira scored 14 points in the first half after missing her first four shots, helping the Cougars rally from 15 points down in the first half to within 32-26 at halftime.
