Wahine basketball team upsets Minnesota
Shawna Kuehu hit an improbable banked 3-pointer to send the game into overtime and the Hawaii women’s basketball team earned a rousing victory with a 77-71 defeat of Minnesota Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH (5-3) went 2-1 in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown and won the tournament title thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Golden Gophers (7-2).
The senior Kuehu, who had just four career 3s before that shot, raised the tournament trophy high before a crowd of 472.
Minnesota fans stayed to applaud tournament MVP Rachel Banham (24 points), who seemingly had the game won with a deep 3-pointer for a three-point UM lead with 4.6 seconds left in regulation.
UH chances were dire as it had to go the length of the court. But Kuehu took a pass from Destiny King, turned and fired just before the buzzer, pumping her fist emphatically and screaming when it found net off the glass and was ruled good after a brief officials review.
The Wahine controlled the extra period as Ashleigh Karaitiana tied her career-high of 22 points, Kuehu also tied her career-best of 19, and Kamilah Jackson earned her sixth straight double-double, 18 points and 11 rebounds.
