Man who apparently drowned off North Kohala coast is identified

A  79-year-old Kohala man who apparently drowned while fishing with a throw net off the North Kohala Coast was identified as Alfredo Orita, police said Tuesday.

A 71-year-old woman fishing with Orita said he was using a throw net near the Halaula lighthouse when she lost sight of him for a few minutes and then saw him floating face down in the ocean. at about 11:20 a.m.

A Hawaii County Fire Department helicopter spotted his body about 200 yards offshore and a rescue helicopter brought it to shore.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
