SAN FRANCISCO » A woman known as the face of the San Francisco Bay Area’s nude rights movement was wed Thursday in front of City Hall wearing only a veil.

Gypsy Taub, a Berkeley mother of three, has been arrested repeatedly for violating the city’s public nudity ban. She was again cited by police after the ceremony, and she said the event was a protest as much as a wedding.

"It was fantastic. It surpassed all my expectations," she said. "It was just an awesome party."

Still, she worried there could end up being stiffer penalties now — including up to a year in jail — because this was her eighth time being cited.

"I don’t want to go to jail," Taub said. But she said it was not in the city’s best interests to imprison her because doing so would only magnify the effect of her activism.

The ceremony began on City Hall’s steps around noon, but 44-year-old Taub and her bridegroom, 20-year-old Jaymz Smith, were escorted by authorities to the sidewalk.

She began the wedding in a light dress, but she was wearing only her bridal veil by the end of the ceremony.

Afterward the married couple danced on the sidewalk with several other nude or nearly nude guests until police warned them that they would have five minutes to get their clothes back on or be cited.

When Taub continued dancing, the police placed her in a blue blanket and brought her to a van. She, her husband and several of her guests then received citations.

Taub was released after she agreed to put her gown back on.

"They were congratulating us on the marriage, and most of them didn’t want to arrest us," she said of the officers.

"We had such a great time."
