This radar image taken this afternoon shows rain over the eastern side of the Big Islands.
Winds are changing and should become southerly on Wednesday, but forecasters still expect mostly sunny skies on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Meanwhile, heavy rains continued falling on the Big Island Sunday night as a weather system stalls over the island.
The rains probably won’t spread to other islands, National Weather Service forecasters said.
The weather service canceled a flood advisory prompted by afternoon rains and thunder storms on windward slopes.
The rest of the islands enjoyed moderate trade winds, with a few of the usual windward and mauka showers.
The trade winds should turn more easterly today, weaken on Tuesday and turn southerly sometime on New Year’s Day.
Muggy Kona weather, accompanying the southerly winds, is likely to stick around through Friday and we could see some vog move over Oahu on Thursday, as well as some afternoon showers, forecasters said.
A weather system moving towards Hawaii from the northwest is forecast to move over the state over the weekend, bringing a greater chance of showers to all islands.
