The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 39-year-old Ewa Beach man who died after his kayak overturned Sunday at Waialua’s Aweoweo Beach as Matthew Ely.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.

Bystanders told paramedics the man was on a kayak when it overturned at about 1:25 p.m., Emergency Medical Services said.

He was pulled from under the water and brought to shore, where first responders began CPR.

Paramedics transported the man in critical condition to a Wahiawa General Hospital, where he later died.
