Long Beach State sweeps Hawaii in volleyball
Senior hitter Taylor Crabb put down 12 kills to lead No. 4 Long Beach State over No. 10 Hawaii 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.
It was the fifth consecutive victory for the 49ers (3-1, 2-1 MPSF) over the Rainbow Warriors (2-2, 0-1). The Beach, ranked No. 1 to start the season, leads the series 38-37 heading into Friday’s 7 p.m. rematch.
Crabb, a Punahou School product and reigning national player of the year, added two aces and was in on five of the team’s 12.5 blocks. Senior opposite Ian Satterfield added eight kills with no errors in 16 swings.
Junior hitter Brook Sedore led Hawaii with season-high 16 kills and freshman hitter Kupono Fey came off the bench for seven in the 100-minute contest..
The Rainbow Warriors fell behind 9-1 in Set 1 and never fully recovered in dropping their conference opener for a second straight season.
The most competitive set was the third. Hawaii chipped away at a 15-10 deficit, scoring five straight behind the serving of senior hitter Jace Olsen. Olsen had an ace, and Sedore and Fey each had a kill during the run.
