Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that sent a man in his 20s to the hospital in extremely critical condition just after midnight.

According to police, the man was crossing Kamehameha Highway near Hekaha Street in Waimalu when he was struck by a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.

The injured man, who was not carrying identification, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Queen’s Medical Center

Police said the man was about 79 feet away from a crosswalk when he was struck.

Speed may have been a factor in the incident, police said. It is not known if alcohol or drugs were factors.

Police closed the town-bound lanes of Kamehameha Highway between Hekaha and Kanuku streets while Traffic Division officers investigated the incident, and reopened the lanes by 3:15 a.m. Saturday.
