An Oahu jury found James Kimo Moses guilty of manslaughter in the 2011 death of a 76-year-old man who suffered fatal burns from a fire Moses set in Liliha. 

The jury also found Moses, 46, guilty of two counts of second-degree attempted murder, third-degree attempted assault, second-degree attempted assault and first-degree arson. The jury didn’t reach a verdict on one count of first-degree attempted murder. 

Manslaughter, a class A felony, is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Second-degree attempted murder, a felony, carries a penalty of life in prison with the possibility of parole. First-degree arson, a class A felony, carries a penalty of 20 years in prison. 

His sentencing is set for July 16.

Moses was accused of starting a rooming house fire Feb. 2, 2011 just after midnight. The fire killed one person and left more than 20 people homeless. Moses had recently been evicted from the Liliha rooming house. Twenty-two people were in the two-story wooden structure at 1909 Liliha St. at the time of the fire.

Clarence Isobe, one of three tenants who suffered burns, died at a hospital. The other two suffered second- and third-degree burns.

Moses was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, five counts of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree arson and four drug possession charges.  

When police arrested him at a Kakaako homeless camp, the hair on his arms was singed.
