MMA fighter taken to hospital after Ohio bout

CINCINNATI >> A mixed martial arts fighter was taken out on a stretcher at the end of a Saturday night fight and then to a Cincinnati hospital for evaluation.

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White told reporters soon after the fight that Erick Silva would be examined for a possible concussion and fractured jaw.

The referee declared Xenia, Ohio, native Matt Brown the winner by technical knockout at 2:11 of the third round at the U.S. Bank Arena. Silva was down and bloodied after a barrage of punches, elbows and kicks.

There was no update available immediately Sunday from the UFC on the Brazilian fighter’s condition.

Professional mixed martial arts include elements of wrestling, judo, boxing and kickboxing by fighters wearing fingerless gloves and no headgear.
