Fire destroys makeshift home in Waimanalo
Fire destroyed a small shelter and caused $35,000 in damages early Tuesday morning in Waimanalo, firefighters said.
A caller reported the fire in the 41-900 block of Mahiku Place at about 1 a.m., said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.
One person lived in the 600-square foot, makeshift structure on agricultural land, but no one was home at the time, Jenkins said. Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 1:56 a.m.
Damages included $30,000 to the structure and $5,000 to the contents. No other buildings were damaged. The cause is under investigation.
