An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Tuesday charging a 30-year-old surfer with attempting to run over a 73-year-old woman in Waikiki.

Jill Anjuli Hansen was charged with second-degree attempted murder, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and attempted unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. Her bail was set at $1 million.

Police said Hansen followed Elizabeth Conklin into a secured parking garage at Diamond Head Apartments on Wednesday and intentionally hit Conklin as she got out of her vehicle. 

According to a court document, Hansen, who was driving a Volkswagen sedan struck Conklin. Then, while Conklin was partially wedged under another vehicle parked in the garage, Hansen tried to hit her again. She reversed her vehicle and accelerated toward Conklin but was unable to strike her because of the woman’s position under the vehicle.  

Hansen again reversed her car and was about to dart her vehicle toward Conklin when a maintenance technician, Christopher Khoury, shattered Hansen’s rear car window with a crowbar to in an effort get her attention and stop her from hitting Conklin again, according to the court document.

Hansen then exited her vehicle and yelled, “My father made me do this, he’s a high powered attorney.”

She eventually drove out of the parking garage and fled. Police arrested her later that day at her Seaview Avenue apartment. 

Khoury declined to comment Tuesday. 

Conklin said in an interview with the Star-Advertiser that she believes Hansen may have tried to kill her for her car, a 2014 BMW 328i station wagon.

At about 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Hansen apparently attempted to exit the intake area at the Oahu Community Correctional Center by trying to slip behind a staffer who was walking through the door that leads to the sally port or secured entryway where vans pull in, according to Toni Schwartz, spokeswoman of the Department of Public Safety. Staffers were able to grab and stop her.

“They caught her right away. She never got out of the intake area,” said Schwartz. 

On Hansen’s Facebook page, she said she is a professional surfer and an ambassador for several companies, but two of those companies said she does not represent them.
