A Kau man was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday for attempted murder in connection with a stabbing near Kealoha Beach Park in Hilo earlier this month.

Paul Gibson, 46, of Ocean View was arrested Thursday morning by Hawaii Island police at Hilo District Court, where Gibson was appearing for a preliminary hearing after he was freed on $374,000 bail in the case. The hearing was cancelled following the grand jury indictment on charges of attempted second-degree murder, third-degree assault, two counts of terroristic threatening, five firearms offenses and resisting an order to stop.

Bail was increased to $700,000 and Gibson is being held until his arraignment, which is scheduled for Friday.

In the May 10 stabbing, a 41-year-old Hilo man sustained multiple stab wounds to the back during an altercation.
