Walmart opening downtown store in mid-July

STAR-ADVERTISER / 2013
The former Macy’s store on the corner of King and Fort streets will become the location of a new Walmart. The retailer will start training new workers in April.

Walmart will open its 10th Hawaii store at Fort Street Mall downtown in mid-July.

The big-box giant plans to hire about 150 workers for the 80,000-square-foot store. Employees were stocking shelves on Thursday in preparation for the opening of Walmart’s first two-story location in the islands.

Similar to its other stores, the Fort Street Mall location will have a pharmacy and grocery department, as well as lawn and garden supplies on the second level. Walmart is replacing Macy’s, which closed in February 2013 and will be just blocks from rivals Longs Drugs and Walgreens.
