Maui fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that damaged 3,000 square feet of construction material at the old Maui Land and Pine cannery in Kahului on Thursday.

A 35-year-old construction worker was injured while fighting the blaze at 120 Kane St. before firefighters arrived. He was treated for shortness of breath due to smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded to the 9:20 a.m. alarm and had the fire under control 40 minutes later.

The fire was extinguished at 11:30 a.m. and Kane street reopened about 15 minutes later.
