Fire crews will widen search for missing teen hiker
Fire officials plan to widen their search for a 15-year-old boy missing since he went hiking Saturday on trails near his home on Ala Akau Street mauka of the Waianae Regional Park.
Fire spokesman Acting Capt. David Jenkins said Monday the search for Richard Vierra Jr is being broadened north towards Makaha.
Vierra went hiking alone at 6:30 a.m. Saturday and called his mother about 11:30 a.m. to say he was returning home but he never arrived, police said.
Firefighters began looking for him after his mother called for help at about 1 p.m. Saturday.
A fire rescue helicopter searched the mountains near Kamaile Elementary School on Ala Akau Street Monday, after someone called to say there was someone signaling from the mountains.
“We didn’t find anything,” Jenkins said.
