FBI warns Hawaii residents of jury duty phone scam

The FBI in Honolulu is warning Hawaii residents about a jury duty scam that attempts to trick people into paying $500.

The warning issued Monday says the scam begins with someone pretending to be a deputy calling a victim on the phone and saying that person is delinquent from federal jury duty service.

The caller advises the victim to pay a fine by obtaining a $500 money order from a Longs Drugs store. The victim is instructed to call a local telephone number and provide the numbers on the back of the money order.

The caller provides names of federal judges, courtroom numbers and badge numbers in an attempt to sound legitimate.
