2 escape injury from cottage fire in Kihei
A fire broke out Sunday afternoon in a 600-square-foot cottage in Kihei, but both residents escaped uninjured, according to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
The blaze caused $60,000 in damage to the home and $10,000 to the contents, he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to have been accidental, Mainaga said.
Kihei and Wailea firefighters responded to an alarm at 4:13 p.m. and found the fire had spread to about a quarter of the cottage, which is in back of the main residence at 2138 Waimaka Place. They brought it under control at 4:35 p.m., Mainaga said.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross met with the two residents to make sure their needs for food, shelter and clothing were met. The Red Cross encourages families to have an evacuation plan with two different routes of escape and a communications plan to help relatives reconnect.
