2 men dead after apparent double drowning off Kahala Beach

Two men died Saturday in an apparent double drowning incident in waters off Kahala Beach.

The two men, ages 31 and 25, were diving with another man around 5:20 p.m. when all three experienced distress. A surfer in the area assisted the other man to shore and alerted lifeguards to the location of the other two.

Ocean safety personnel used Jet Skis to retrieve the two men still in the water. Both were taken in critical condition to a local trauma center, where both later died.

The men were diving about 500 yards off the Hunakai Street beach access.

The incident happened during a south swell with waves of 3 to 5 feet, and occasional higher waves rolling in Saturday.
