A 17-story residential building designed for seniors will soon begin to rise in the Pawaa area near the Hawaii Convention Center.

Site work that includes erecting a construction crane for the $75 million project called Kalakaua Gardens has been ongoing, and the developer plans to hold a ceremonial ground-breaking event Tuesday.

California-based Island Paradise Investments LP is developing the project at 1723 Kalakaua Ave.

The tower is designed to have about 200 units, including 136 for assisted living and 23 for memory care. There also will be 49 skilled-nursing beds.

Completion of the project is expected in late 2015.
