UH softball team sweeps BYUH, UH Hilo

The University of Hawaii softball team overpowered BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii-Hilo to open the Kama’aina Tournament on Friday.

In her first appearance at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, UH pitcher Kanani Aina Cabrales struck out eight, walked none and held BYUH to three hits in UH’s 12-0 win to open the fall exhibition tournament.

Freshman Rachel Lack hit a leadoff home run to spark a three-run outburst in the bottom of the first and Leisha Li’ili’i added a two-run shot in the fourth. Li’ili’i went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs.

The Rainbow Wahine hit three more homers in support of freshman Brittany Hitchcock in a 10-0 win over UH-Hilo.

Kristina Akiona hit a two-run homer to center field in the bottom of the third to open the scoring and Heather Morales launched two-run shots in the fourth and fifth innings.

The  tournament continues Saturday with the Wahine facing Chaminade in the finale at 3 p.m.

Saturday’s games

Chaminade vs. UH Hilo, 11 a.m.

BYU Hawai vs. UH Hilo, 1 p.m.

Chaminade vs. Hawaii, 3 p.m.
