North Dakota shocks N Arizona 30-28

GRAND FORKS, N.D. >> Reid Taubenheim kicked a 35-yard field goal with 4 seconds left as North Dakota upset Northern Arizona 30-28 Saturday in the Big Sky Conference.

The freshman kicker made three field goals on the day for UND (4-8, 2-5), which snapped a three-game losing streak.

“Big field goal, that’s a young kid,” UND coach Bubba Schweigert said. “. It wasn’t picture perfect in the second half, but we’ll take the win.”

North Dakota led 24-7 at the half but the Lumberjacks (7-4, 5-2) roared back in the second half to take a 28-27 lead when receiver Alex Holmes took a long lateral and threw a 58-yard TD pass to Beau Gardner with 9:40 left.

Freshman quarterback Keaton Studsrud led the game-winning drive from his own 20 starting with 2:05 left.

Studsrud was 4-for-11 for 61 yards in the game. He completed passes of 29 yards to Tyrhe Ivey and 14 to Josh Seibel on the winning drive.

“All around it was just a good team effort,” said Studsrud, who scored on a 1-yard run in the first half.

Jer Garman gained 14 of his career-high 235 yards on the drive that set up Taubenheim’s kick. Taubenheim also had field goals on 21 and 32 yards.

“You can’t really ask for anything better than this, a win and a good amount of yards,” Garman said. “It was a really fun environment.”

North Dakota’s Big Sky-leading defense and key special teams plays led to a 24-7 halftime lead.

UND sacked quarterback Chase Cartwright five times in the first half and held the Lumberjacks to 11 yards rushing in the first half.

Cartwright rebounded after the half and threw for 316 yards and a score.

Garman had a career-long 78-yard TD run. He also scored on 4-yard run following a botched NAU punt in the first quarter.

The Lumberjacks got a Marquice Paige 1-yard TD run to get within a touchdown. On the next play, Garman took a toss off tackle and went the distance for a score. UND then used a long punt return to set up Studsrud’s 1-yard run. A blocked NAU field goal led Taubenheim’s 21-yard field goal and a big halftime lead.

NAU made a game of it in the third quarter on Cartwright’s 29-yard TD pass to Ify Umodu and Paige’s 1-yard run.

“We have to play better in the second half but we’ll take this win,” Schweigert said.

Paige had 103 yards on 17 carries and Umodu caught seven passes for 103 yards. Gardner caught three passes for 110 yards.
