Coast Guard assists flooded boat off Oahu

The Coast Guard is helping a 70-foot commercial fishing vessel off of Oahu that took on water.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday, crew members aboard the vessel, Pacifica, notified the Coast Guard that the vessel is flooded with water. Coast Guard Spokeswoman Petty Officer Melissa McKenzie said the vessel is flooding at about 10 gallons of water per minute. Pacifica is currently about 144 miles north northwest of Oahu.

Six people are aboard the vessel. There are no reported injuries.

At about 10:05 a.m., the Coast Guard C-130 airplane reached the fishing vessel and dropped dewatering pumps. "They’re using the pumps to pump the water out as quickly as possible," said McKenzie.

The crew from the C-130 plane monitored the situation until the 87-foot cutter, Kittiwake, reached the vessel Sunday afternoon.
