Fallen trees spur closure of Malaekahana’s Kahuku section

Due to recent tree-falling incidents, Malaekahana State Recreation Area’s Kahuku section is closed until further notice, state Department of Land and Natural Resources officials said Thursday afternoon.

The department, in consultation with the Friends of Malaekahana, has determined that Kahuku section’s camping and public recreation areas are unsafe, officials said.

Campers in the section must leave, but are offered the option of moving to the adjacent Malaekahana State Recreation Area, Kalanai Point section, at no additional charge. Malaekahana Kalanai Point section is 0.6 miles north and the Kahuku section is 1 mile north of Laie.

DLNR will work with an arborist to assess which trees, if any, may warrant trimming or removal, officials said. DLNR will initiate the recommended work immediately after he assessment.

The Kalanai Point section will continue to be available for camping. Permits may be obtained via the Hawaii State Parks website: hawaiistateparks.org.
